When we smile, the most eye-catching is the smile. The secret to a good smile is white, shiny teeth. And the secret of white, shiny teeth is its good health.
Every tooth consists of three different layers. From the outside, first layer is the enamel or the outer layer of the teeth which is the hardest part of the body. The second layer is called dentin (the inside hard layer), and then the inner most layer is the pulp. The pulp contains the nerves, blood vessels and connective.
For healthy teeth all the parts of the teeth have to be in good health. If for any reason, the pulp is exposed to the outside, the tissue within becomes inflamed and infected. This requires an endodontic treatment or a root canal treatment. This is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth is infected .This infection may spread through the root canal system of the tooth leading to an abscess.
Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that involves treatment of the pulp (root canal) and surrounding tissues of the tooth.
The root canal may be infected in case of tooth decay, large cavity or even a fracture of the tooth.
An endodontic treatment is done to save the tooth and prevent further infection and inflammation by removing the decayed pulp. After successful endodontic treatment, a crown or any other restoration is placed on the tooth to protect it and restore it to full function. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the infection will spread and the tooth may need to be removed.
To prevent endodontic infections, proper oral care has to be maintained. Everyday brushing and flossing can prevent the build up of bacterial plaque. The bacteria present in the plaque are the major culprits for a number of infections affecting the gums and root.
A regular visit to the dentist once in six months can ensure proper care and attention for our teeth. This should be coupled with good personal oral care for healthy teeth
